Abstract

This case study aimed at understanding how the enactment of actual two modes of visual literacy (TV Mode vs. Virtual Realty) contributes to our understanding of story re-tellers^ ways of representation, elaboration and gist recalling. Six fourth grade students were exposed to two types of visual representations. First, they exposed to a silent story through ordinary TV representation and later they exposed to the same story using Virtual Reality. The study fathomed the differences between the two modes of representation in term of volume and reaction of the same students using the same content. To gauge the volume of retelling, the occurrences of representation, gist recalling, and elaboration were tabulated during the observation. While the students^ reaction by retelling was analyzed through using their natural expressions and responses to the silent story. The use of other different multimodalities such as videos, audios, visual reading materials contributed to consolidate the results. Additionally, a casual interview was conducted with the six participants. The study results revealed that the VR use is significantly higher than the TV in term of the volume of retelling (representations, elaboration and gist recalling). In term of their reaction by retelling, the participants were more excited, engaged, and reactive when using the VR, which is reflected when they were interviewed. The results from this study could contribute to our knowledge base, pedagogical base, and research of using virtual reality shows as vibrant tools in transforming literacy.

Inquiry-Based Social Classes and Language Learning Assessment
Bilal Khalid Khalaf

University of Anbar

Abstract

The cognitive process of learning is considered as the core element for acquiring and developing learners^ academic literacies (Baker, 2018). Numerous researches in the literature showed the significance for engaging learners in the learning context as a meaningful method for developing their cognitive literacies. However, learning through inquiry or inquiry-based learning (IBL) is considered as one of the constructive approaches that designed as a response for the demand on students-centre learning that accompanied with the present technological advance. Social learning classes adopted this approach of learning, but the studies for evaluating the efficiency of this instructional model in social classes are relatively small. The current research sheds some light on the role of inquiry-based learning in developing academic literacies in social classes, especially the field of translation studies. In addition, how the inquiry approach supports the roles of educators and literacy advisors in developing and assessing learners^ academic literacies had been reviewed. The present study concluded that inquiry-based learning is a pedagogical model of learning which approved its efficiency in developing learners^ academic literacies but, it requires further modifications in the social science classes. Lastly, this study set up the bases for researchers, instructional models, and curriculum designers and other beneficiaries to invest in this part of knowledge for further advantages.

Cross-cultural Learning in YouTube and Bilibili Video Comments: Case Study of Black Myth: Wukong Trailer
Budi Kurniawan

Chinese Department, Petra Christian University
Siwalankerto 121-131, Surabaya 60236, Indonesia

Abstract

Research showed that language and intercultural learning can take place in YouTube videos comments. In Chinese language and culture settings, YouTube may provide plenty of resources to present interactive information exchange on Chinese cultural topics through global points of view, but since YouTube is banned in China, these discourses may lack Chinese netizens points of view (local or national sense of the culture). Hence this study compares YouTube video comments and the comments of the similar video posted in Bilibili, a Chinese video sharing website hugely popular in China. The trailer and trailer reactions of Black Myth: Wukong, a highly anticipated upcoming game by Chinese developer Game Science, which is based on Journey to the West, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, are used as cases. The analysis of exchange structure of the comments stipulate evidence that comments on videos uploaded in both sites provide clearer and more thorough picture of differing stances and perceptions of global and local. These divergent views are useful to provoke richer intercultural learning and critical discussions, and to enhance cross-cultural understanding.

Samples were taken from as many as 130 people aged 18-25 years in Jakarta and its surroundings. The results of the analysis showed that more than a quarter of respondents considered that FwB was reasonable and almost one third had normal sexual intercourse with FwB. Most of the respondents are realize the effects of FwB such of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), addiction to sex, and reluctance to marry. Half of the respondents carried out sexual activities by respondents with FwB included kissing, touching the chest, and some of them continued with rubbing genitals, oral sex, anal sex, and sexual penetration. Some of them even agreed to abortion with the consent of both parties, agreed that before marriage the couple must have sex to show affection, and agreed to love one night. The practice of FwB has had a negative impact, one of which is the effort to end AIDS by 2030 as a national and global program. Education needs to be done to increase comprehensive knowledge about befriending behavior and health risks as well as the lack of HIV and AIDS knowledge in Indonesia.

Abstract

Braindance based on multicultural education in the context of physical education for children can be a promising innovation in introducing regional culture. This program is also applied to early childhood education to stimulate working memory skills, inhibition control, and mental flexibility. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the braindance based on multicultural (BBM) program to improve children^s executive function skills. This study used the Solomon-4 experimental design, in which 44 young children as participants were included in each group. The results showed no difference in executive function skills between the two assessments for the control group (groups 2 and 4) but found a significant effect for children in groups 1 and 3 whose executive function improved significantly after receiving a six-month exercise program. Given our observed interaction effects of the pretest and intervention on executive function, we encourage the researchers to investigate the potential synergies of educational dance programs for other aspects of child development.
