Abstract

Research showed that language and intercultural learning can take place in YouTube videos comments. In Chinese language and culture settings, YouTube may provide plenty of resources to present interactive information exchange on Chinese cultural topics through global points of view, but since YouTube is banned in China, these discourses may lack Chinese netizens points of view (local or national sense of the culture). Hence this study compares YouTube video comments and the comments of the similar video posted in Bilibili, a Chinese video sharing website hugely popular in China. The trailer and trailer reactions of Black Myth: Wukong, a highly anticipated upcoming game by Chinese developer Game Science, which is based on Journey to the West, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, are used as cases. The analysis of exchange structure of the comments stipulate evidence that comments on videos uploaded in both sites provide clearer and more thorough picture of differing stances and perceptions of global and local. These divergent views are useful to provoke richer intercultural learning and critical discussions, and to enhance cross-cultural understanding.
