Rethinking Dance Aesthetic: The Presence Of Ephemerality In Virtual Choreography
Riana Diah Sitharesmi

Gorontalo State University

Abstract

Today virtual world allowed the rise of new culture of Indonesian dance, a virtual culture. It is somehow an obligation to advancing creativity so that we can well posit the challenge towards the dance existence. As a virtual choreography differed from recording dance performance, I am addressing some crucial matters, e.g. the competence of a choreographer to master digital technology, the presence of ephemerality as the nature of dance, and the prospect of an economically breakthrough in contemporary works productivity. For this paper, my imperative is to investigate the aesthetic significance of virtual contemporary choreography and to emphasizing ephemerality, the nature of the dance itself.

Since my experiment on creating virtual dance failed to complete, I carried on the research within a more theoretical investigation, which caused a slight change on the process. I observed contemporary (virtual) dance presentations to seeing and understanding the essentials, which also a reflective evaluation upon my own failure. The selected literature sources on virtual art and technology were used to deconstruct a previous insight to bring the analysis into philosophical inquiries. At the end, the research found that doing virtual contemporary choreography is not only a matter of epistemology but also a matter of value, which necessarily reach an ontological aesthetic.

Abstract

As a widely-known figure from Mahabharata and Kresnayana saga, life story of Shri Krishna was often carved in temple reliefs as a mean to teach heroism and morality values. In regard of his status as Lord Vishnu^s avatar, Krishna was traditionally portrayed with symbolism attached to the god, as regulated in canonical scriptures such as Silpasastra and Manasara. Nevertheless, his portrayal in reliefs was transformed from time to time. This research is focused to study the symbolism of Vishnu in Krishna^s imagery on three reliefs in Indonesia: Vishnu Temple in Prambanan Complex, Main Temple in Panataran Complex, and Kedaton Temple, by comparing symbols in Krishna^s attire (bhusana) and attributes (laksana). In analyzing the transformation of Vishnu^s symbolism in Krishna^s imagery, this research is conducted using descriptive and comparative method with iconography and historical approach. This research posed as a preliminary study in mapping the transformation of Hindu iconography in relevance with the socio-cultural aspect in society. It is assumed that the flourished depiction of Kresnayana in East Java^s temples are occurred due to the widespread influence of Vaishnava sect, originated from South Asia in the 11th century CE. In East Java temples, Krishna was not only portrayed as Vishnu avatar, but also as the manifestation of the King himself, who was act as the representation of Vishnu in microcosm level. The syncretism between Vaishnava and Shivaism that flourished in the Kediri era and culminated in the Majapahit era, supported by the weakening of Indian influences and a strong influence of local beliefs, also affected the visualization of Vishnu^s symbolism in the portrayal of Krishna^s attire and attributes.

Abstract

Abstract

Design becomes a way to answer problems in society, so design disciplines must be integrated with other disciplines. Design education institutions have the chance to provide opportunities for students to interact directly with the industrial world. An integrated design project can be a learning model to create a collaborative mindset in design education. Literature studies show that an integrated design project was carried out by Staatliches Bauhaus in Germany in 1923 through the construction of the Haus am Horn as a solution to the housing problem involving social, economic and technical aspects- while Institut Teknologi Bandung has created a field laboratory in the interior and exterior work of the CONEFO building complex in 1964. This study aims to find the similarities between the two models of integrated design projects, which confirm the collaboration between practitioners and academics. The results of the study provide the assumption that there is a similar Bauhaus activity model in design activities at Institut Teknologi Bandung, which then becomes part of the overall research on the Influence of Bauhaus on Design in Indonesia.

Institut Teknologi Bandung

Abstract

When the physical present is not available as an option, going digital is another way to keep cultural heritage awareness going. One of the most popular and easy to use digital platform to this day is social media. The social media is fundamentally designed as a participative medium. Users expected to participate, without physical present, through sharing and contributing contents and contextual information such as photos or personal diary entries. Social media users can also participate in cocurating of memories collection and networking building with other users, in fact there are opportunities to raise the exposure for the cultural heritage awareness.
Following World Heritage Convention 1972, among the defined types of cultural heritage, industrial heritage is one of the least known forms of heritage, so there is a need to promote this form of heritage.
Awarded in 2019 as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the city of Sawahlunto is located 90 kilometers from Padang, the central hub of West Sumatra, and about 2.5 hours^ drive from other popular destination. In addition, the long and outstanding mining history has set the existence of industrial heritage in Indonesia. Particular to this site, due to the location constrain, the city of Sawahlunto is hardly to be the sole tourist destination despite its potential, thus the need to promote the city of Sawahlunto and industrial heritage will be a major task and the need to utilize the most current alternative media , which is social media, is crucial.
This paper analyse the result of a study on how the content of Instagram, as one of the social media applications that use the visual platform, can be used for raising awareness of cultural heritage, moreover the aim of this study is to understand the relationship between Instagram contents and Cowans^s diplomacy technique namely: monologue, dialogue, and collaboration as a mode for engaging social media users as the audience to raise awareness of cultural heritage.

Abstract

The culture of the Minangkabau tribes in West Sumatra has existed since ancient times. One of the masterpieces of architectural cultural heritage that characterizes Minangkabau is the rumah gadang, which is a traditional building belonging to the Minangkabau tribes, which is beautiful, of high value and full of meaning. This information is not widely known by the Indonesian people, especially people outside Indonesia. While the architecture of the rumah gadang is decreasing, it requires media, where people can get various information about the rumah gadang. In the era of the digital technology revolution, various communication technologies were born in the form of various applications that can be used as a means of social media. One of them is the Instagram application, where users can exchange information, especially through photos, videos and other information so that the observer (followers) gets various images. The research method used is the virtual ethnographic method, by making virtual observations through the Instagram application. The data were analyzed qualitatively using Visual Discourse theory. From this research it was found that information through social media, especially Instagram, is not only a place to exchange photos and videos but can provide positive information about the architectural culture of the Rumah Gadang. Abstract

Covid-19 is one of the biggest plague disasters in 2020 that hit the whole world, and Indonesia is one of the countries affected by Covid-19. The impact of covid-19 is the implementation of PSBB or social distancing, which results in limiting large events such as weddings, gatherings, busking, opening ceremonies, and closing ceremonies. The implementation of the PSBB had a significant impact on the income of band players and dancers who got the most passive income from large and small events. In order to bridge the GAP, researchers are interested in finding out how the band players and dancers are still earning even though it is not as big as it was before the pandemic. This study used observation and interviews and confirmed using the mimicry theory. The results of this study indicate that band players and dancers must have side jobs or regular jobs outside of big and small events. So that when a pandemic or disaster occurs, it does not make the band players and dancers lose their opinion directly.

The Eternity Of Melody And Lyrics Style In Music Clan
Rully Aprilia Zandra

Universitas Negeri Malang

Abstract

The domination of the Markasanan keroncong in the 1960-1965 era resulted in the perpetuation of musical elements and formations in keroncong in East Java. Chronological sequencing is necessary for mapping models in the cultural cycle. Causality between models is a mapping towards nomothetic concepts that might be found in the discussion. This research is focused on finding cultural cycles that occur in the keroncong genre of East Java. The researcher classifies the data on the development of musical elements related to East Java, and the use of East Javanese characters in the melody and keroncong lyrics. Valid data is presented again after being clarified with the literature regarding the concept of mimicry and hybrids. Clarification in each sub-discussion is carried out to find analytical answers that can answer the research questions that have been asked. This research finds that the melody and lyrics of the East Java keroncong orchestra songs are composed of the hybrid cultural assets of the songwriter. Hybrid musical content, which consists of local and imported capital, is perpetuated in a simultaneous and continuous cycle. The preservation of local and imported cultures takes place simultaneously, continuously, influences each other, and is identical. The same local and imported capital will continue to have its offspring as a musical clan.

Abstract

Keroncong is a music genre that has a long history in Indonesia. This music has fulfilled the functions of aesthetic, entertainment, communication, community integration, emotional expression, and physical reaction. It also fulfils the characteristics of music suitable for psychological and physical therapy purposes. However, there are no satisfactory conclusions about how keroncong music works clinically in reducing pain.To bridge this gap, researchers are interested in mapping how keroncong music works in the process of reducing pain.Data collection was carried out by searching for library sources on the Google Scholar library and online media, OJS, journal indexers, OneSearch pages, and various other online media. To discuss the results of the study, a co-citation analysis was carried out and the formulation of a logic flow that was confirmed or negated by the results of clinical keroncong and health research. The data series that have been arranged in a flow model is used to formulate statements in response to research questions. The results of this study indicate that keroncong can be used as music therapy for psychological and physical therapy. The use of keroncong music in a psychological aspect is to reduce anxiety, increase a sense of calm and comfort, thereby triggering alpha waves stimulation. At the same time, the physiological use of keroncong is to reduce pain by triggering the endorphin and serotonin hormones simultaneously. This study found a keroncong groove model as a pain reducer. Endorphin and serotonin hormones are triggers that trigger pain reduction. The simultaneous production of these two hormones is triggered by psychological and physical conditions triggered by keroncong tempo and melody.

Innovation is a necessity in the development of traditional folk music and the use of digital technology is part of the work of innovation itself. The musical potential consists of several characters, especially the tone system, melodic contour, grenek, interval patterns, and circular musical journey, as well as the normative freedom of expression of spontaneous singing texts in the presentation that characterizes this musical entity. The contribution of digital technology in processing the potential of krinok music and the publication of its processed products is an inseparable part of the creative process itself. ITB (Institut Teknologi Bandung)

Abstract

Besides functioning as a support for the community at that time, the river also served as a means of transportation, trade, and even defense. One of them is the Kriyan river which is located in the estuary area, which is the entry point that connects the Kasepuhan Palace through Nawa Gapura Marga Raja with the outside world, especially from the direction of the Java Sea, which is said to have been inhabited by estuarine crocodiles, which are known to be ferocious. The developing myth of the white crocodile, supposedly the guardian of the Nawa Gapura Marga Raja, was a prince^s son who was cursed by the sultan. The prince was so lazy in his daily life, that he got the curse, and finally realized that crocodiles had to live in the water (river), right in front of the Nawa Gapura Marga Raja, another term for Lawang Sanga. For Javanese people, buildings are associated with traditions and beliefs, starting from the shape of the building structure, to understanding the myths in it. The research was conducted using a visual narrative method. The results of the research are expected that according to the story that developed around the surrounding community, there is a mythological animal of a white crocodile who was a prince ^Angkawijaya^ who was cursed by his father Sulthan Sepuh 1 and became the guardian of Nawa Gapura Marga Raja.

Pedati Gede Pekalangan Cirebon will be the main object of this research. Although there are sources say that Pedati Gede logically cannot run, and many also believe that Pedati Gede is a magical vehicle that can walk by not touching the ground (flying), but this research is not to prove the truth of the story. Finding the symbolic meaning of Pedati Gede is the main focus. This research is a qualitative research with an ethnographic approach through oral history, and a semiotic approach through visual narrative. Data collection obtained through interviews, observation, and literature study. The results of this study indicate that Pedati Gede Pekalangan is a symbol of the closeness of the Cirebon muslim community to the God.
