Abstract
The antioxidant activities of six flavonoids having different basic chemical structures from three artocarpus species (A. nangkadak, A. champeden, and A. altilis) were studied to establish their structure-activity relationships using the DPPH method. Special attention was paid to the flavonoids Kudraflavone C (flavone), artocarpin (flavone), and artocapanon (flavane), which possess different basic structures but the same hydroxylation pattern (2^ and 4^ -OH) in the B-ring. It was found that these three flavonoids exhibited comparable antioxidant activities against DPPH leading to the conclusion that the presence of 7-OH group, 2^ and 4^-OH groups in the B-ring and 2,3-double bond is a determinant of a high antioxidant capacity. Moreover, the presence of prenyl groups and structural modification involving these groups to flavonoids such as cyclization of the 3-prenyl to make a pyranohydrobenzoxanthone type (cycloartocarpine, cyclomorusin, cyclocommunol) can decrease antioxidant activities.
