DIGITAL LITERACY AMONG STUDENTS IN INDONESIA PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION 2024

Abstract

The lack of digital literacy within society needs to be addressed. This deficiency makes individuals more susceptible to being influenced by fake news, hoaxes, or misinformation. The spread of false news, hoaxes, or misinformation occurs throughout the day, especially as presidential elections, where individuals compete to gain the public^s support. This study aims to measure the level of digital literacy among students of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Universitas Negeri Jakarta, in relation to the 2024 Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections. This study employs quantitative approach that assesses the dimensions of digital literacy, namely socio-emotional skills, information skills, and critical skills. The population of this study consists of all active students of the Faculty of Social Sciences in 2024, with a sample of 98 students selected using cluster random sampling technique. Descriptive tests were conducted for each dimension. The results of the descriptive test show that the information skills dimension has a higher average compared to other dimensions followed by critical skills dimension and socio-emotional skills dimension. This indicates that students already possess a basic ability to understand the information they receive, based on the credibility of sources, the authenticity of information, ethics, and how to verify information. The study also shows that students fairly proficient in determining the amount of information needed and comparing information sources to assess their accuracy. Therefore, based on these findings, it is necessary for students and the public to at least possess information skills to avoid hoaxes.
