Abstract
Character education cannot be universally applied without considering the specific contexts of students, teachers, and social environments. Each area has its own unique characteristics, such as in coastal regions where students may come from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, such as dysfunctional families and challenging social environments. Additionally, it is crucial to consider how children interact within their family and community settings. Finally, the competencies of teachers and the challenges they face must also be taken into account. This study aims to analyze the challenges teachers face in developing student character in coastal areas of Padang. The research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing data collection methods such as observation, interviews, document studies, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). Data analysis follows the Miles & Huberman technique, including data reduction, data display, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that the challenges teachers face in character education are highly complex. These dilemmas encompass social, economic, and familial backgrounds, as well as living environments that influence students^ character when they enter school. Teachers must navigate the alignment of students^ needs with curriculum demands and professional competencies. The findings of this study could provide recommendations for policymakers to address various aspects of children^s needs in coastal areas, including curriculum requirements, student placement through zoning systems, and other dilemmatic issues faced by teachers
