Abstract

This study aims to develop computational thinking of the student in redox reaction through the integration of Design Thinking with STEAM-PjBL. The research involves 41 year-10 students in one of the secondary schools in Rangkasbitung, West Java, Indonesia. The study was conducted by utilizing various online platforms such as Zoom Meetings, Google Jamboard, and Edmodo to facilitate learning. The qualitative method was employed with interviews, observation, reflective journals, and chemistry test techniques. Five stages of Design Thinking were employed Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test (Plattner, 2010). The computational thinking skills are assessed through four indicators developed by Guidry et al. (2014) of Decomposition, Algorithms, Data, and Abstraction. The results show that the computational thinking skills of the student were developed by encouraging ideas, and taking active action by thinking critically and deeply to solve contextual problems of water pollution in the Ciujung River due to the use of detergent waste, related to redox reaction by the STEAM project with empathy and creative. Understanding the relationship of chemical concepts to daily life is a challenge in applying this approach. The integration of Design Thinking in STEAM-PjBL can be employed to engage students in challenging learning experiences and developing 21st-century skills.
