Abstract
This study aimed to develop students critical thinking skills in chemistry learning through solving the environmental problems by implementing STEM project based learning. Students developed project of soap and detergent waste treatment equipment to manage the problem of water pollution in relation to acid-base topics. The research employed qualitative method by collecting data through interviews, reflective journals, observations, and critical thinking tests. The research involved 25 year-11 chemistry students at a private Islamic boarding school in Banten, Indonesia. The data collected were analyzed using five themes of critical thinking skills, namely identify the question at issue, conceptual understanding, ideas connection, assumption, and inferences. The result showed that the students have good critical thinking skills which was shown in the rubric level of the mastering and competent level. This research encouraged the students to improve their courage in expressing the ideas, understand the acid base concept, explore various scientific resources, connect ideas, and create justification of assumptions in addition to environmental awareness and behavior. The challenge faced during the research was the management of resources and time, and the development of project ideas according to the learning topic. The innovative teaching approach has engaged students in meaningful and empowering learning experiences.
