Abstract

The study aims to engage students in 21st century learning through the implementation of Dilemma - Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) teaching model. Dilemma-STEAM teaching model integrates dilemma stories with problem solving tasks to challenge students to develop their STEAM thinking and strategies to solve the problems. The qualitative research was employed in three schools involving 25 students in one primary school and 60 students in two junior high schools. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, reflective journals, and classroom observations. Using thematic data analysis, this study found that the students were engaged in discussions of dilemma story about energy. Moreover, as they exercised different strategies to solve the problems, they were able to construct their understanding of STEAM concepts such as environmental car, oven, and hydroelectric power plants. The activities also helped the students to develop 21st century skills of critical and creative thinking skills. In addition to solve the problems, they develop skills of collaboration and communication. Finally, dilemma-STEAM enables multidisciplinary approach in conducting science lessons which provide meaningful learning experiences for students.
