Abstract

Orthosiphon aristatus is a herbal plant from the family of Lamiaceae. The plant especially the leaves is widely used to treat diseases such as diabetes mellitus, urinary disorders, rheumatism and hypertension. Additionally, numerous pharmacological research has shown that this plant has the ability to exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial activity. However, there are not enough studies supporting its role in wound healing mechanisms. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the wound healing activity of O. aristatus ethanolic extract toward human skin fibroblast cells HSF using the migration assay. Our preliminary study indicated that the IC50 value of the O. aristatus ethanolic extract from the cytotoxicity study was 512.8 microg per ml. Furthermore, the extract of O. aristatus at a concentration of 20 microg per ml, which was lower than the IC50 value, had successfully enhanced wound closure by 93.6 percent within 18 hours of incubation compared to the control group 89.1 percent. Based on the findings, further study using an animal model is required to enlighten the proper mechanism of this plant^s ability to be employed as a wound-healing regime.
