Abstract

Students language politeness is the main thing in carrying out good interactions in verbal communication between speakers and speech partners. In fact, in elementary schools there are still many students who have difficulty communicating with teachers and their peers using politeness language. The application of local wisdom is one alternative to overcome students language politeness. The purpose of this study is to overcome students language politeness at the elementary school level by using local wisdom in the learning process. This research is a qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. The participants of this study were elementary school teachers in Pekanbaru City, Palembang City, Banyuwangi Regency, Jember Regency, Kediri Regency, Yogyakarta City, Kupang Regency, Padang City and Tulungagung Regency. Data was collected by means of FGDs, in-depth interviews, and observations with respondents. Data analysis used the Milles and Huberman model with the stages of data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing and verification. The results showed that: 1) Schools still face problems related to students language politeness that violates the politeness principle, namely: Tact Maxim, Generosity Maxim, Approbation Maxim, Modesty Maxim, Agreement Maxim, Sympathy Maxim. 2) Schools are still trying to maximize the use of local wisdom in the form of stories or legends in the Indonesian language learning process for politeness materials.
