Abstract
The number of people with diabetes mellitus (DM) throughout the world continues to increase. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin produced. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar. On the other hand, inulin which is contained in yam is known as polysaccharide which is thought to reduce blood sugar levels. Therefore an experiment was carried out to give yam starch extract to patients with diabetes mellitus. This study aims to observe glucose levels among patients with diabetes mellitus before and after the administration of yam beanextract, determine the effect of yam bean extract on blood glucose levels among patients with diabetes mellitus after consuming 150ml of starch for 150 consecutive days every morning and night. This was a quasi-experimental quantitative study with one group pre-test post-test design. The subjects of this study were 15 people with diabetes mellitus found in the Jatiwangi Community Health Centre Unit. The samples were taken with purposive random sampling. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that there was an effect of yam bean extract on blood glucose levels among patients with diabetes mellitus with a p value of 0,00. Health care providers are expected to be able to socialize yam bean extract therapy to patients with diabetes mellitus. Furthermore, patients with diabetes mellitus are expected to be able to apply therapy through the administration of yam bean as an alternative diet. The process and results of this study can be used as a source of additional information for the development of nursing science.
