Abstract
Background: (Hornstedtia alliacea) have a metabolite compound that is flavonoid which can inhibit bacterial activity, so it can be used to make toothpaste gel. Bacteria used are Streptococcus mutans bacteria which are gram-positive bacteria. Streptococcus mutans bacteria can cause dental caries. Objective: To find out the formulation and evaluation of Hornstedtia alliacea extract toothpaste gel, and study the antibacterial activity of various plants based on literature studies. Methodology: Hornstedtia alliacea seeds were extracted by multilevel maceration method and gel toothpaste were made in three formulas with varying concentrations Na-CMC and sorbitol. Results: The results showed that Hornstedtia alliacea extracts could be used to make toothpaste gel. Where the three formulas use different concentrations of Na-CMC as a gelling agent and sorbitol as a humectant. The evaluations included organoleptic tests, homogeneity tests, dispersion tests, foam height tests, pH tests, and hedonic tests. Conclusion: Extracts of Hornstedtia alliacea can be used to make toothpaste gel and the results of evaluations carried out by the requirements, but for the dispersion test in formula A it does not meet the requirements.
