Abstract
Mathematical understanding is important for students because it is the basis for developing higher-order thinking skills. Gender and disposition can affect the achievement of mathematical understanding. Pesantren-based schools have a different curriculum from regular schools. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the mathematical understanding of students in terms of disposition and gender. The research was carried out in senior high schools based on pesantren in Indonesia. The research subjects were 6 people with high, medium, and low dispositions. Data were collected using tests of mathematical understanding, disposition questionnaires, and unstructured interviews. All research instruments used have been tested for feasibility by mathematics education experts. The data were analyzed qualitatively. The results showed that students with high dispositions had a good mathematical understanding, understood concepts, able to apply them in the calculation process. Students with moderate disposition have sufficient mathematical understanding, understand concepts but are less skilled at applying them in the calculation process. Meanwhile, students with low dispositions have the less mathematical understanding and less understanding of concepts. Male and female students have varying mathematical understanding. Female students were more careful in answering questions, while male students were more careless in answering questions.
