Abstract
Psychologically, post-stroke sufferers have changes and limitations in moving, communicating, and thinking. Patients will feel disabled and this disability causes disrupt of self-concept. Positive affirmation therapy may increase the self-concept of stroke patients. Study in this field has never been carried out at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong hospital.
To examine the effect of positive affirmation toward self-concept among stroke patients at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong hospital.
This study used a quasi-experimental pre-and posttest one group design. A total of 82 respondents were recruited by simple random sampling at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong hospital in Kebumen Regency, Central Java Province, Indonesia. Self-Concept Scale consisted of 25 items were used to measure self-concept (p value= 0.01) to validity score and 0.962 for reliability score. Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was used for analyzing the data.
This study showed that after the intervention, all respondents had positive self-concept (100%) increase from mean 4.30 before therapy to mean 20.87 after therapy. There was a significant difference before and after positive affirmation therapy in increasing self-concept among stroke patients at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong hospital (p-value= 0.000).
Positive affirmation therapy may effective to increase self-concept among stroke patients.
