Abstract
Recycling cattle manure into organic fertilizer can improve resource efficiency and support more sustainable smallholder livestock systems, yet farmer uptake remains limited. This study examined farmer characteristics and factors associated with interest in utilizing cattle manure as organic fertilizer. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Kebundadap Timur Village, Saronggi District, Sumenep Regency, East Java, involving 100 beef cattle farmers selected purposively. Data were collected through interviews and questionnaires in November-December 2024 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, group comparisons, and binary logistic regression. Only 32% of respondents expressed interest in manure utilization, while 68% were not interested. Logistic regression showed significant associations between adoption interest and gender (OR = 9.938), herd size (OR = 0.454), household size (OR = 0.541), extension service intensity (OR = 0.316), knowledge of organic fertilizer (OR = 1.208), and free time availability (OR = 2.288). The findings indicate that adoption interest reflects household resources, knowledge, and extension exposure. Improving the relevance and practical orientation of extension, farmer knowledge, and labor-saving manure management may encourage wider utilization of cattle manure as organic fertilizer.
