Abstract
Smallholder layer chicken farms in Indonesia operate under volatile feed costs and uncertain egg prices, while organic eggs offer a potential market premium. However, transitioning from conventional to organic production involves technical, economic, and market risks that may discourage farmers from switching. This study aims to analyze the preferences of layer chicken farmers in Blitar Regency, East Java, toward transitioning to organic egg production, and to examine how transition attributes and farm characteristics are associated with that choice. A quantitative survey was conducted using a discrete choice experiment (DCE) with 150 farmers selected through multistage purposive sampling in four subdistricts: Kademangan, Srengat, Bakung, and Ponggok. Each respondent evaluated eight choice sets, each containing two organic production scenarios and a conventional status quo option. Six attributes were included: technical training, sales contract, organic certification and traceability, the presence of neighboring farms that have switched, production cost increase (30%, 60%, or 100%), and egg selling price (IDR 35,000, 45,000, or 55,000 per kg). Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and a conditional logit model. The results are expected to identify which attributes are most strongly associated with the probability of choosing organic production, and to provide a basis for designing support schemes, partnership models, and marketing arrangements for organic egg development in Blitar Regency.
