A Household-Scale Circular Agribusiness Model Strengthening Housewives^ Knowledge of Cage-Free Arab Chicken Rearing Using Kitchen-Waste-Based Feed for Family Protein Adequacy and Micro-Enterprise a) Politeknik Pembangunan Pertanian Malang, Jl. Dr. Cipto 144A Bedali, Lawang, Malang 65200, East Java, Indonesia, ikayuliana[at]polbangtanmalang.ac.id Abstract Household poultry keeping is common in rural and peri-urban Indonesia but is rarely managed for family nutrition or income and seldom uses household organic waste. This paper proposes a household-scale circular agribusiness model developed through a design-oriented extension approach combining an integrative literature review with a participatory needs assessment. The target group was housewives in the Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) group of Taman Harjo Village, Malang Regency, who keep small flocks of cage-free Arab laying hens. The assessment identified high feed costs, underutilized household waste, and limited use of social media for marketing. The model comprises (i) processing kitchen waste into feed- (ii) cage-free management with basic welfare and biosecurity rules- (iii) a family-first egg consumption rule based on protein requirements- and (iv) a PKK-based business pathway covering surplus aggregation, branding, record-keeping, and digital marketing, supported by a training curriculum and a four-level evaluation framework. A scenario based on published data showed that 10 hens produce about 5.7 eggs per day, providing one egg daily for a four-person family and about 50 surplus eggs per month. The model requires empirical validation. Keywords: animal protein- circular agribusiness- food waste- household poultry- women^s empowerment. Topic: Agribusiness and related subjects |
