Rethinking Waste through Education: A Scoping Review of Holistic Approaches to Waste Literacy in Sustainability Learning a) Department of Biology, Universitas Negeri Malang, East Java, Indonesia Abstract As global waste challenges intensify, the role of education in shaping waste-conscious citizens has become more vital than ever. Waste literacy, when framed holistically, offers learners the ability to critically understand, evaluate, and act upon waste-related issues. This scoping review explores the global landscape of holistic educational approaches to waste to waste literacy within the broader framework of sustainability learning. It identifies how waste literacy is conceptualized, integrated, and assessed in both formal and non-formal education. Using the PRISMA-ScR protocol, a comprehensive search was conducted across major academic database (Scopus and Web of Science) for studies published from 2010 to 2025. Inclusion criteria focused on peer-reviewed articles that addressed educational strategies to promote waste literacy through holistic or systems-based learning. From 1.106 initial records, 38 studies met the criteria. Thematic analysis revealed key approaches: (1) interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary integration of waste topic, (2) place-based and experential learning, (3) values-driven and systems thinking pedagogy, and (4) participatory assessment techniques including portfolios and behavior-based metrics. Holistic education for waste literacy is gaining traction globally but remains underrepresentated in national curricula. Effective programs tend to incorporate community engagement, emotional connection to sustainability, and long-term behavioral change models.
