Abstract

This study aims to analyze the creative thinking skills of Animation students at the State Polytechnic of Creative Media (Polimedia) in applying the Project-Based Learning (PBL) method to animated character and pop-up book creation projects. The PBL approach was chosen because it is considered capable of encouraging students to be more active, innovative, and creative in solving problems and producing original visual products.

In this study, we used a qualitative descriptive approach through observation, interviews, and documentation of student projects. The analysis was based on four main indicators of creative thinking skills: (1) fluency, (2) flexibility, (3) originality, and (4) elaboration. The implementation of PBL is expected to demonstrate improved creative thinking skills in second-semester animation students, such as the ability to explore various character ideas, combine visual elements uniquely, and develop stories and designs in engaging and innovative ways. The main challenges faced were time management and limited production equipment, but these also encouraged them to seek creative solutions both independently and collaboratively.

It is hoped that the conclusions of this study will indicate that the Project-Based Learning approach is effective in developing the creative thinking skills of animation students, particularly in the context of character production and narrative visual media such as pop-up books. It is recommended that this approach be continuously implemented with the support of facilities, intensive mentoring, and process- and outcome-based evaluation.
