Abstract

This research examines Betawi Oral Culture and Literature in East Jakarta. This research was conducted as is customary in semiotic research, including interviews, document studies, literature reviews, and field observations. This study aims to analyze the defamation instruments in Betawi mask performance humor from an investigative semiotic perspective. The research method used is a qualitative method with semiotic data analysis techniques. The results indicate that defamation instruments in Betawi mask performance humor can be found in several aspects, namely: (1) the use of words with negative connotations, (2) the use of symbols with negative meanings, and (3) the use of humor that can create negative impressions. This study also seeks to uncover defamation instruments in Betawi mask performance humor, which can be used as a means to criticize or satirize a particular individual or group. However, the use of these instruments can also have negative impacts, such as creating a negative impression or damaging a persons reputation. The conclusion of this study is that the instrument of defamation in Betawi masked humor is a complex phenomenon that requires more indepth analysis. This research is expected to contribute to the development of semiotic and investigative theory in analyzing the phenomenon of defamation in humor.
