Abstract

Background: Muscle strength is crucial for athletic performance in martial arts. Adequate nutrition and training influence muscle strength. This study aims to determine the relationship between protein adequacy, carbohydrate adequacy, and training duration with arm and leg muscle strength in martial arts athletes in Banyumas.
Methods: A correlational study with a cross-sectional approach involving 52 martial arts athletes from pencak silat, karate, and taekwondo in Banyumas. Participants were selected via purposive and snowball sampling. Data collection was carried out for three days. Filling out characteristic forms, measuring body composition, and the first 24-hour food recall interview were conducted on the first day. Muscle strength measurement and the second 24-hour food recall interview were conducted on the second day. The third 24-hour food recall interview was conducted on the third day. Data were analyzed using Kolmogorov Smirnov and Spearman/Pearson correlation test.
Result: As many as 82.7% of respondents had a deficient level of protein adequacy, while 69.2% of respondents had an excessive level of carbohydrate adequacy. All respondents had sufficient training duration, but 42.3% of respondents had insufficient training frequency. There was no relationship between protein adequacy and arm and leg muscle strength, carbohydrate adequacy and arm and leg muscle strength, and training duration and arm and leg muscle strength.
Conclusion: There was no relationship between protein adequacy and arm and leg muscle strength. There was no relationship between carbohydrate adequacy and arm and leg muscle strength. There was no relationship between training duration and arm and leg muscle strength.
