Abstract

Background : School dropout is a global and national educational problem, especially among adolescents (aged 13-18 years), which can lead to psychosocial problems such as helplessness. The helplessness experienced by school dropouts can be manifested in various signs and symptoms, including expressing verbally that they do not have the ability to control or influence situations, expressing doubts about their role as teenagers, and being apathetic and passive. The approach that nurses can take is to provide psychosocial nursing interventions, including logotherapy and therapeutic group therapy.
Purpose : Nursing interventions, logotherapy, and therapeutic group therapy were provided to clients experiencing helplessness with the aim of observing changes in symptoms and the clients^ ability to cope with helplessness.
Methods : Nursing interventions and implementations for five school dropouts with helplessness were reported in the form of a case report.
Results : The results showed a decrease in signs and symptoms of helplessness in all aspects, namely cognitive, affective, physiological, behavioral, and social aspects. The signs and symptoms that decreased the most were in the cognitive aspect, such as thinking that they could not produce anything and difficulty concentrating, and in the behavioral aspect, such as being quiet, passive, and avoiding eye contact. Meanwhile, the signs and symptoms that were still found included those in the social aspect, such as lack of socialization with others and avoiding other people.
Conclusion : There were decreased in signs and symptoms of helplessness and the clients^ ability to cope with helplessness improved. This case report recommends that mental health nurses at community health centers collaborate with various parties to develop programs for school dropouts experiencing psychosocial problems and conduct further research through nursing interventions and specialist nursing interventions with continuous evaluation to overcome clients^ psychosocial problems.
