THE USE OF QUALITATIVE SPORT, EXERCISE AND HEALTH IN CULTURAL SPORT PSYCHOLOGY

Abstract

The use of qualitative survey enables researchers to collect qualitative data with depth, including in social issues which considering as culturally sensitive. Drawing from a research about cultural trauma related to mass sport stadium incident happened in Malang, Indonesia, this paper describe lesson learned from the research process using qualitative surveys. Despite the fact that qualitative survey is novel and efficient way of collecting rich nuances of qualitative data, it required careful considerations related to the context where the research located. This paper described those lessons, which were: 1) as a method of collecting data, qualitative survey must consider the demographic population before deciding using qualitative survey- 2) Researcher should anticipate the sensitivity of collecting culturally sensitive data when the data collection schedule close to other events which possibly makes the data collection hampered- 3) considering the channel on informing the qualitative survey as it could be unfamiliar for common people- 4) rewards did not always guarantee for possible participants to take part, as they might find the unfamiliar method in unfriendly. Several recommendations in using qualitative research sensitive to culture also suggested.
