Abstract

The higher education landscape is undergoing significant transformations, particularly with the inclusion of Generation Z, individuals born between 1997 and 2012, whom rapid digital advancements have shaped. This study aims to address the educational needs of Generation Z, focusing on developing strong speaking skills and character. It explores the potential of project-based learning (PBL) and role-play activities facilitated through YouTube to meet these needs. The research examines how YouTube aligns with Generation Z^s learning preferences and its effectiveness in enhancing students^ speaking skill and character development. Conducted in the English Language and Literature Department at the Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Negeri Medan, the study involved 50 respondents who completed a questionnaire. Results indicated that 56% of respondents expressed moderate interest in using YouTube for role-playing educational content, suggesting a favorable but cautious attitude. Meanwhile, 24.5% of respondents showed mild interest, recognizing some benefits but having reservations. In contrast, 18.9% demonstrated high enthusiasm, indicating strong engagement and support for this educational approach. This study provides valuable insights for educators on integrating YouTube into teaching strategies to effectively address the diverse learning needs of Generation Z students, particularly in developing speaking skills and character through innovative pedagogical methods.
