Abstract
This study aims to analyze the meaning and values contained in the poem and folk songs of the Karo Batak people, one of the ethnic groups inhabiting the interior of North Sumatra, Indonesia. This study uses a qualitative approach in identifying and analyzing the meaning and values contained in the poem and folk songs of the Karo Batak ethnic group. The results of the analysis show that the poem and folk songs of the Karo Batak ethnic group contain deep meanings about the history, traditions, and daily life patterns of the Karo Batak people. Social values such as solidarity, sacrifice, and togetherness are reflected in the lyrics that are inspiring and provide moral messages to the listeners. In addition, cultural values such as respect for ancestors, harmonious relationships with nature, and a sense of family also dominate in the Karo poem and songs. These findings illustrate the importance of cultural heritage in shaping identity and strengthening social ties in the Karo community, as well as highlighting the cultural richness that needs to be preserved and disseminated to future generations. This study contributes to further understanding of Indonesia^s cultural richness, as well as providing insight into the importance of preserving and appreciating local cultural heritage in the context of modern globalization.
