Abstract

According to reliable sources, the Batak tribe consists of Batak Toba, Karo, Mandailing, Pakpak, and Simalungun. Therefore, there are 7 original ethnic groups: 5 Batak ethnic groups, one Malay ethnic group, and one Nias ethnic group. Each of these ethnic groups has local cultural resources in the form of ornaments. These ornaments are generally referred to as Batak ornaments, Malay ornaments, and Nias ornaments. However, in general, the ornaments of these seven ethnic groups have not yet been fully developed into batik designs. Therefore, this research aims to explore and adapt the ornaments of the seven ethnic groups into batik techniques. The research methodology applied involves creating prototypes of batik from the seven ethnic groups and describing them using the principles of art theory. This research into the creation and development of art prototypes has a special characteristic. This special characteristic is a focus on the practical creation of artworks that result in biolithic prototypes of batik art from the seven ethnic groups
