Environmental Literacy of Undergraduate College Students in Indonesia: Environmental Literacy Instrument with Spiritual (ELIS)

Abstract

The increase in the world population continues to accur, while the available natural resources are running low, knowledge about the environment at universities has a very important role, in order to be able to develop environmentally literate human resources. This study aims to measure the level of environmental literacy with spiritual (ELIS) covering ecological knowledge, environmental hope, cognitive skills, and behavior of undergraduate college students. Samples were taken from representatives of 3 universities in Indonesia who entered the physics education study program, including 30 students from Universitas Negeri Malang, 30 students from Universitas Negeri Makassar, dan 30 students from Universitas Musamus Merauke. From ELIS measurements in the range of 0-100%, 68% indicated that their environmental literacy was in the poor category. Students had somewhat high behavior 78% and environmental hope 79% but low of ecological knowledge 58% dan cognitive skill 57%. Including environmental education in the university curriculum is very necessary to improve students^ environmental literacy. Students will spearhead natural recouse management expected to be able to manage efficiently and environmentally friendly.
