Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of local wisdom, Siwalu Tali, in democratic education through an ethnopedagogical approach as a strategy for character development rooted in cultural values. Siwalu Tali, which encompasses values of solidarity, deliberation, and peaceful conflict resolution, aligns with participatory democratic principles and is seen as capable of strengthening student character in Indonesia. Integrating local cultural values in education is expected to instill a more contextual and profound understanding of democracy. This qualitative study employs in-depth interviews and participatory observation, involving Batak Toba community leaders. Findings indicate that the integration of Siwalu Tali values into an ethnopedagogical curriculum positively impacts student character development. Values such as deliberation, solidarity, and tolerance are internalized through various subjects and extracurricular activities, enhancing students^ communication skills, peaceful problem-solving abilities, and inclusive attitudes in social interactions. Moreover, this approach helps students perceive democracy as a culturally embedded practice rather than an abstract concept. The results underscore the importance of an ethnopedagogical approach in democratic education, especially in regions rich in local cultural heritage like Batak Toba. Local wisdom-based education not only enriches educational content but also strengthens the student character needed for inclusive democratic life. The integration of Siwalu Tali into democratic education offers opportunities for more relevant learning in students^ daily lives, particularly in diversity and conflict resolution. This study suggests that Siwalu Tali values significantly contribute to democratic education and character development. The ethnopedagogical approach, connecting the curriculum with local culture, proves effective in shaping tolerant, inclusive, and dialogue-oriented students.
