Abstract

The Suku Anak Dalam is an indigenous community from the Jambi Province, residing in forested areas and spread across several regions such as Batanghari Regency, Merangin, Sarolangun, Muaro Jambi, and others. One group of the Suku Anak Dalam resides in Desa Pelempang, Mestong District, Muaro Jambi Regency. This research is based on a statement from Datok Rahman, the Traditional Leader (Pemangku Adat) of the Suku Anak Dalam in Desa Pelempang, who stated that after Indonesia^s independence, the term ^Tumenggung^ was replaced by ^Pemangku Adat.^ This study employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through direct interviews with the Traditional Leaders of the Suku Anak Dalam in Desa Pelempang. The research focuses on the leadership of the Traditional Leaders within the Suku Anak Dalam community in Desa Pelempang and explores whether there has been any change in their duties and authority after the highest leadership term changed from Tumenggung to Pemangku Adat. The results of the study indicate that only the term has changed, while the duties and authority of the Pemangku Adat remain the same as those of the Tumenggung in the past. In other words, the Pemangku Adat still holds the highest leadership position within the Suku Anak Dalam community in Desa Pelempang. The selection of the Pemangku Adat is based on lineage, willingness, and the capabilities of the successor, as well as the approval of the community. The role and responsibilities of the Pemangku Adat may vary across different communities and cultures.
