EMPATHIC COMMUNICATION: A NEW APPROACH TO CHARACTER STRENGTHENING

Abstract

This research is motivated by the increasing prevalence of verbal and non-verbal violence among students in recent years. Various prevention and character strengthening programs have been implemented, but the results have been disappointing. This study aims to fill the gap by exploring a new approach to character strengthening, focusing on empathic communication. Empathic communication is an innovative approach in education that is being socialized to create a learning environment that is enjoyable, warm, respectful, open, caring, and engaging. This study uses a qualitative approach with Grounded Theory method. Data were collected using a mix-method approach, consisting of a survey of 161 respondents, interviews with 8 teachers, and classroom observations. Respondents and informants came from public and private elementary, junior high, senior high, and vocational schools in the Jabodetabek area. The results show that empathic communication is more effective in engaging students, creating a more conducive classroom environment, and promoting voluntary compliance, feelings of safety, and openness. This research discuss about contributes to a new perspective on character strengthening through empathic communication. Explores the effectiveness of empathic communication in creating a positive learning environment and fostering a sense of openness and safety.
