Abstract

ABSTRACT

This research aimed to evaluate the effect of salinity on survival and growth of milkfish fry as well as to determine optimum salinity to obtain the highest survival and body energy level. It was research with 5 different salinity treatments (13, 18, 23, 28 and 33 ppt) and 3 replications. Data analyses with ANOVA with level of significance 0.05.The results showed that salinity affected immensely on the survival and growth of milkfish fry (p<0,01). The highest survival was in those treatments 13, 18 and 23 ppt with survival rate 75.87 %, 73.67 % and 70.33 %, respectively. While survival rate of treatments 28 and 33 ppt were 65.87 % and 59.40 %, respectively. Salinity also affected the growth of milkfish fry (p<0.01) both on body length and weight. The highest body length was in the treatment 13 ppt, followed by in those treatments 18, 23, 28 and 33 ppt with 8.75, 7.98, 7.91, 7.77 and 7.06, respectively. The highest body weight was in the treatment 13 ppt, followed by in those treatments 18, 23, 28 and 33 ppt with 8.21, 7.50, 6.62, 6.28 and 6.39 g, respectively. There was also a significant difference (p<0.01) on the body^s energy level of milkfish fry from those treatments. The lowest body energy level was in the treatment 13 ppt followed by in those treatments 18, 23, 28, and 33 ppt with 4075.32, 4260.49, 4475.28, 4510.10, and 4695.21 kcal/g, respectively. It be concluded that optimum salinity for milkfish fry nursery was 13-23 ppt.
