Abstract

Elementary school teachers lack teaching materials for songs whose lyrics and melodies refer to local wisdom. Textbooks for primary schools that contain musical content generally use old songs that are known nationally, although the content does not match the needs of learners based on their socio-cultural conditions. This study aims to create and develop songs for elementary school level whose lyrics refer to local Sundanese-Kasumedangan wisdom and whose melody contains a phentatonic touch, so as to form song teaching materials for elementary schools in West Java. The method used in this study is development research (model development stage, model use, and model evaluation) with quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative data is collected through surveys, and qualitative data is collected through observation and interviews. This paper is limited to presenting research results at the model development stage (prototype development) and some model use (limited trials). The results of the limited trial showed that the majority of students could understand song lyrics in the local language and understood the message mandate based on Sundanese-Kasumedangan cultural values, but a small number were still hesitant. Likewise, in the melodic aspect of the song, the majority of students claimed it was easy to sing, pleasant to hear, and stimulating to move or dance. A small percentage of students hesitate with the melody of the song and hesitate to move or dance. It can be concluded that, in general, the song is acceptable to the majority of students, although it can be developed again to suit the conditions of all students.
