Abstract

Understanding how to utilize biological knowledge is essential for generating innovative projects across various domains, particularly within the realm of design. With a biomimetics approach, the principles of plant movement have been extensively researched and implemented in various fields such as architecture, crafts, design, medicine, and soft robotics. This literature aims to theoretically analyze the factors that can influence and control plant movement and its technical applications, particularly in the fields of architecture and design. The literature review method involves analyzing several articles obtained through the Connected Papers platform to find relevance and topic alignment. The keywords used for the search include Plant Movement and Bio-Inspired Motion Mechanism. The findings from the literature review are as follows: 1. Plant movement can be influenced by moisture levels or humidity in the environment. This phenomenon is a result of the hygroscopic characteristics of plants, 2. The direction of plant movement follows a curved pattern influenced by the orientation of the plant fibers, 3. The application of plant movement phenomena through a biomimetics approach often involves controlling plant movement and its curvature by exploring modifications in the fiber and layer structure of materials. The recommendations from this literature review suggest that the phenomenon of plant movement can be applied in the development of product designs.
