Abstract

ABSTRACT
Purpose - this research aims to explore the factors that influence the intention of muzakki (zakat payers/donors) to pay zakat through Financial Technology (Fintech) applications by examining risk perception theory, Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Perceived Behavior theory (TPB), altruism and empathy.

Design/methodology/approach - The Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) technique is used to analyses data obtained from arranged surveys completed by 150 purposefully selected respondents.

Findings - Donors do not view perceived risk as a primary factor influencing their decision to pay zakat and donate through fintech. Moreover, the findings indicate that altruism and empathy play a significant role in determining the intention to pay zakat through fintech.

Practical implications - This research is consistent with the government^s efforts to promote the development of a sharia-compliant economic and financial environment, particularly in the management of Islamic social funds. If this philanthropic fund is optimally managed, sustainable development goals (SDGs) such as the eradication of poverty and the reduction of inequality will be achieved.

Originality/value - This research contributes to the development of literature on the acceptance of fintech technology for social funds and zakat payments by introducing the concept of risk perception, that are derived from five perceived risks including privacy risk, legal risk, time risk, psychological risk, and security risks.
