Abstract

The person who does not have specific knowledge about natural minerals is tough to identify the types of diamonds that are sourced from natural minerals (natural diamonds), made in a laboratory as synthetic diamonds, or fake diamonds. This condition has problems in the business, especially in using diamonds for jewelry purposes, in which artificial or counterfeit diamonds are often sold at high prices, similar to natural diamonds. Based on these conditions, this study aims to compare three methods of identifying natural, synthetic, and fake diamond types. The diamond identification method uses three testing instruments: The Gemology lab test, the Diamond DK10100 instrument - GemTrue Veritas, and Diamond Selector. The study shows that the testing instrument recommended for the primary reference for identifying diamond types is testing through the Gemology Lab because the test uses three methods using a Refractometer, Gemological Stereo Microscope, and UV light showing accurate test. The results of this study can be used as a reference for selecting the type of testing instrument to the needs of the jewelry industry and individual needs, avoiding the identification of diamond types inappropriately in the aspect of selling prices, type of material, and quality of the diamonds.
