The Diversity of Moss in Tamiajeng Climbing Trail, Mount Penanggungan, East Java

Abstract

Indonesia is a country with a variety of ecosystems, including tropical rainforest areas. The tropical rainforest area is the area where various types of mosses are most often found compared to other areas. Moss is a low-level plant and a group of epiphytic plants that are commonly found on tree trunks, dead wood, weathered wood, soil, and rocks. Moss grows in wet and humid environmental conditions, with sufficient light intensity, and can live well in the lowlands and highlands. Many biodiversity studies have been carried out, but most cases are reported from West Java or Central Java, and a few from East Java. Mount Penanggungan is one of the mountains in East Java with vegetation dominated by mountain forest which has a character like a tropical rain forest. The Tamiajeng trail is the most popular route for climbers, starting from Tamiajeng Village, Trawas, Mojokerto Regency, which is on the southwest side of the mountain. This study was conducted to determine the diversity of mosses on the Tamiajeng hiking trail, Mount Penanggungan, East Java. This study uses an exploratory descriptive method. Moss samples were taken by plotting 30 x 30 m2 on the right and left of the hiking trail for each type of terrestrial and arboreal moss. The results of the study found 12 tribes of mosses with 16 different types of mosses. The value of the Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index is 2.58 in the medium category. The Morishita Index value is between 0.83-1.23 with a uniform and clumped distribution pattern. The Simpson Dominance Index shows that there are 8 dominant species of moss, 7 subdominant species, and 1 non-dominant species.
