Abstract

In recent years, the grit concept has been accepted by the world. It is defined as having enthusiasm and endurance for long-term goals. The idea that persistence is ultimately more important than the intrinsic ability to achieve goals has broad appeal. This review evaluates the notion of grit to elucidate the relationship between constructs and propose future research opportunities. Four hundred twenty-two entries were identified by a systematic search of five databases, including ProQuest, PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. After screening and determination of eligibility, 40 articles were retained and conceptually analyzed using the Walker and Avant technique. These findings establish passion, persistence, and long-term goals as defining characteristics of grit and a broad network of the antecedent, consequence, mediating, and moderating variables. Positive attitudes, behaviors, and habits appear essential for achieving long-term goals. The findings of this review contribute to our understanding of grit in a variety of ways, which may be beneficial to future researchers and health experts. We found antecedents and outcomes from grits, as well as potential moderators, which could help explain and influence the strength of correlation. These findings advance our understanding of grit and its beneficial effects on engagement, performance, and well-being.Grit has been linked to decreased fatigue and depression and improved performance and well-being. Additional research is needed to determine optimal practices for developing resilience at the individual and community levels.
