Abstract

This study aims to analyze students^ interest in learning Mandarin in the Hospitality Management Department and the effectiveness of the application of video-based learning. Mandarin has become the second foreign language after English, so that Mandarin is a foreign language taught throughout the world, including in Indonesia. In addition, the majority of tourists visiting Indonesia are from China. Thus, the need for human resources that can communicate in Mandarin in the service sector, especially hospitality, also increases. The effectiveness of the application of video-based learning depends on the provision of material information from two main elements: visual and audio. During off class lessons, students are given the task of making videos with topics that have been determined by the instructor. Researchers want to examine two things: the effectiveness of video-based learning for improving students^ communication skills and students^ interest in learning Mandarin with video-based learning. The research methodology is done by distributing questionnaires to students and observations from video conversations produced by students. This research is expected to know the effectiveness of video-based learning in helping students learn Mandarin and obtain an overview of students^ interest in learning with video-based learning. It is also expected that student competencies in mastering Mandarin will increase. The study results show that the newly designed video learning environment is a superior teaching tool than the general video learning environment to improve student learning performance.
