Analysis of Diesel Engine Oil Contaminated with Water Using the Fault Tree Analysis Method Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Malaysia1 Abstract Oil in diesel engines as lubricants, coolants, cleaners, if the oil is contaminated by water, the oil cannot be used again. The contamination that occurs in the diesel engine generator oil with water has a large enough impact on the unit^s reliability. Where the diesel engine generator set cannot be operated and has a significant impact on repair costs. If the diesel engine generator set is operated for backup power, it will affect the power supply. The purpose of this study is to determine the causes of engine oil contamination with water. In this study, a fault tree analysis method was used to determine the root cause of engine oil contamination with water. Several engine components contribute to the contamination of the engine oil with water, including damage to the aftercooler, seal liner, liner crack, broken oil cooler seal/plug, and oil pump seal. However, the components described are based on Fault Tree Analysis and based on testing, as well as checking, leading to the oil cooler component. And the results of the research show that the cause of the oil being contaminated by water is the damage to the seal on the oil cooler, where the oil cooling system uses water media, if there is a seal or plug in the oil cooler, then the water will flow to the oil pan and cause the engine oil to be contaminated with water. As for the bypass oil cooler component, it was found to leak testing, where the damage occurred to the brittle plug gasket Keywords: Engine oil, contaminated water, oil cooler failure Topic: Engineering and Technology |
