Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of learning using Podcasts and how quickly the catching ability of students learning Mandarin. Due to time constraints during the Mandarin learning period, people^s opinion that learning Mandarin was the most difficult language because it had a different tone that influences meaning. Accuracy in pronunciation of spoken vocabulary would affect fluency in communication. Mandarin podcasts could be a great way to improve vocabulary listening skills in the form of short audio recordings to discuss a topic. This research adopted a qualitative study that was an in-depth interview with students majoring in Hotel Management, Binus University, who were studying Mandarin using podcasts and without podcasts. The researcher first asked students to translate the meaning of vocabulary. After that, the researchers invited students to watch podcasts in Mandarin for six minutes duration. Then students were given a test of the vocabulary material on the podcast. The test results have found that the students^ ability by watching podcasts compared to studying with textbooks for more than 15-20 words without using podcasts. Students feel motivated if every learning material in a textbook can also be done in the form of podcasts. This will be very helpful and encourage them to be able to learn more independently.
