Exploration of Elementary School Students^ Scientific Attitudes Through Virtual Lab Work During Covid 19 Pandemic

Abstract

This study aims to assess whether online practicum activities using a PhET interactive virtual simulation laboratory can bring up scientific attitudes in science learning for 5th-grade elementary school students during the pandemic. This research was carried out with a qualitative descriptive method involving 100 students from 4 classes in an elementary school in the city of Bandung. The instruments used in this study were a questionnaire to measure students^ perceptions of scientific attitudes in virtual practicums and an observation rubric through video recordings of practicums to measure students^ scientific attitudes individually and in groups. Quantitative data analysis was carried out descriptively using SPSS 25 and the emergence of scientific attitudes in practicum video recordings was analyzed using HyperResearch software. The results showed that the highest perception score for students who worked individually was in the curiosity aspect, which was 88.0, the discipline aspect, which was 67.5, and the honesty aspect, which was 85.5. Meanwhile, for students who did virtual practicum in groups, a higher score than students who did virtual practicum individually was shown in the aspect of responsibility, which was 68.3, and accuracy, which was 66.1. Qualitatively, the aspects that most often emerge from the video analysis of the practicum recordings of students working individually are ^Accuracy^, ^Curiousness^, ^Responsibility^, and ^Honesty^. Meanwhile, in group video recordings, the attitudes that appear most often are ^careful^ and ^responsible^ attitudes. The results of this study indicate that online practicums assisted by interactive PhET simulations can still support the formation of students^ scientific attitudes so that they can be used as alternatives for online learning activities during the pandemic.
