Combination of Fenton Mechanism and Electrocoagulation Technology for Treatment Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME)

Abstract

Indonesia is the largest palm oil producer in the world. In proportion to the increase in production, the waste generated also increases. The palm oil mill effluent (POME) has relatively high COD and BOD so that if it is just thrown away it will cause environmental pollution. The Fenton process is one of the most effective methods in removing COD and BOD, but because Fenton utilizes ferrous ion reagents, the wastewater after the Fenton process contains quite high iron heavy metals. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out further research on the processing of POME from the Fenton process which is then combined with electrocoagulation techniques. Fenton^s research process begins with finding the optimal dose of process reagent, which is 1 liter of wastewater, 10 ml of H2O2 and 1.25 grams of FeSO4. Furthermore, the study continued with the electrocoagulation process using a time variation of 10, 20, and 30 minutes with a voltage of 20 volts. The results showed that all treatments had met the quality standards of palm oil waste with the best results obtained for Fe metal of 89.21%, COD of 99.95% and BOD of 99.96%.
