Livelihoods strategies of Seaweed Farming Households in North Buton of Indonesia

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify livelihood strategies of seaweed farming household in the Kulisusu bay, North Buton, Indonesia. A formal survey was administered to the households in the Kulisusu bay using a structured questionnaire covering the patterns of income from seawedd farming, fishing and other occupation of 62 selected respondents. The identified strategies used by the farmers are farming, fishing and non-farming. In addition, the results showed that experience in farming, access to credit and to extension services were possibly the major determinants of livelihood strategies. There is a need to do some public extension services and trainings focusing on the farming and fishing to invigorate farming household^s income.
