Abstract

Indonesian people who live in multilingual and multicultural country tend to experience more of language phenomena such as language variations. One of the language variations is particle variations. This study aims to investigates the use of Javanese particles in Indonesian language done by speakers who live in Malang region. The data were taken from observation of daily communication and through YouTube videos. Questionnaire was also used to verify the data and obtain the motivations. The data were in the form of utterances. The research design used mix method (qualitative and quantitative methods). The data were analyzed by using socio-pragmatics theory proposed by Culpeper (2009) and motivations of the speakers doing the code-mixing (Javanese particles in Indonesian language) by Crystal (1997), Holmes (2013), Wijana & Rohmadi (2013), and Joos (1967). The results show that the speakers are motivated by several reasons and tend to use the code-mixing in informal situation. It also reveals that gender and ethnicity have a role in the use of the language particles while communicating. This study has potential to be developed further, especially its social context.
