Fundamental Theory for Identifying Optical Properties of Metamaterials with Combination of Wiremesh Structure (WS) and Split Ring Resonator (SRR)

Abstract

It has been studied theoretically about the phenomenon of electromagnetic wave propagation, including the reflection and refraction events that affect a material that has permittivity (&#949-) and permeability (&#956-), both of which are negative (metamaterial). The metamaterial being studied is a combination of material with negative permittivity (&#949-), namely Wiremesh Structure (WS) and material with negative permeability (&#956-), namely Split Ring Resonator (SRR). In this case negative permittivity (&#949-) and negative permeability (&#956-) are a function of the frequency (&#969-) which can be plotted on a graph to make it easier to get the negative interval of the two materials. The propagation of electromagnetic waves on metamaterials certainly has new consequences for Maxwell^s equations. In addition, reflection and refraction on metamaterials produce modifications to well-established physical laws, such as Snell^s law and Fresnel^s law. From these two laws, quantitative information is obtained regarding the reflection coefficient (r), transmission coefficient (t), reflectance (R), and transmittance (T).
