The Role of Intelligence Agency in Combating Terrorism

Abstract

Intelligence is the spearhead for domestic defense in a country. There are several main tasks that make the State Intelligence Agency the spearhead of domestic defense. Namely, providing analysis related to domestic security, conducting investigations related to indications relating to terror, conducting security in certain matters, even intelligence can arrest someone who is strongly suspected of being linked to a terror network. The criminal act of terrorism is a trans-border crime, terrorism that has developed into a very dangerous, organized, widespread, systematic network. Terrorist operations are usually carried out by specially trained and organized clandestine elements. Many countries include their intelligence to play an active role in countering terrorism. The intelligence perspective in countering terrorism is needed on a strategic spectrum. The ability of intelligence to seek information, process information and present information for decision making is essential in supporting counter-terrorism measures. Intelligence information is needed considering that acts of terrorism are compiled and carried out in private using the clandestine method (covert activities). Terrorism groups operate in secret. To read and analyze these movements requires intelligence and counterintelligence capabilities. The purpose of this research is to find out how to optimize the role and function of intelligence agencies in the prevention of terrorism in Indonesia.
