Application of House of Quality in Assessment of Biodiesel - Diesel Fuel Blending Technologies Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology Abstract Biodiesel has gained attention for substitution of diesel fuel due to its advantages as a renewable and low emission fuel. Currently biodiesel is used as a mixture with diesel fuel to obtain certain volume percentage of biodiesel in the fuel. However, there are some characteristics of biodiesel that is different from diesel fuel and should be considered to obtain a homogeneous and accurate blending. Important aspects in biodiesel - diesel fuel blending are turbulence, density and temperature of both fuel, and mixing method. There are several mixing methods such as inline blending, in-tank blending, in-truck blending and in-vessel blending. Each method has advantages and disadvantages according to capacity, time consuming, and homogeneity. The objective of this work is to conduct technology assessment by applying a house of quality (HOQ) matrix developed in a case study of biodiesel - diesel fuel blending system. The HOQ provides a comparative analysis and identification of specific characteristic in the blending system to meet with the customer expectations, supported by a simulation using computational fluid dynamics software. The result of the analysis shows that inline blending with additional static mixer has higher accuracy and faster mixing time than other blending methods therefore recommended as the best method Keywords: Biodiesel, biodiesel - diesel fuel blending, house of quality, computational fluid dynamics, inline blending Topic: Mechanical Engineering |
