MERIDIAN MASSAGE THERAPY TO REDUCE HAND EDEMA ON STROKE PATIENT

Abstract

Meridian massage is a therapeutic touch to consciously include the use of distraction impact by stimulating cutaneous general body through the channel system consisting of longitudinal and transverse channels which spread throughout the body like forming a regular mesh. It has the effects to accelerate blood circulation and peripheral nerve-endings. This study aim to know the effects of meridian massage toward hand edema reduction in stroke-patients. The research was conducted from May 1 to September 1 2020. The research location in the Rumah Sakit Umum Daerah Kota Tasikmalaya, Jawa Barat, Indonesia. This research method is a true experimental design with pre-test and post-test approach control group design. The Sample was 36 patients, divided into two groups: an experimental group of 18 patients, 18 patients for control group. Every stroke patients who experienced edema of the hand is given meridian massage treatment. Meridian massage is done for six days , first beginning with pre-test and ending by post-test . Assessment instruments for edema used observation sheet edema scale levels. The results of stroke patients who experienced edema in his hands after the meridian massage treatment decrease edema (p = 0,016). Stroke patients who experienced edema in his hands after the meridian massage for 10 minutes 1 time per day for 6 days decreased edema, it means the meridian massage techniques are very effective to implement in patients with edema in his hands.
